One of my new clients is the Tulane Marching Band…an entity that had been struggling for years with low retention and, well, little interest. But this year their numbers are up and there’s excitement back on the field. I am shooting their home games, documenting what they do, hanging out, being college kids, playing their ass off in the Dome, and spelling things on the field in groups. And no, i wont be able to make the Tulane v. LSU game – bummed about that, but watta ya gonna do, a catastrophe of a drumtographer. The game was fun, got royal treatment, got to hang in the presence of..the DOME, old leathery sportswriters (they’re ALL leathery, with a few exceptions) calling the games and snacking on their free cookies – as i was.
But damn…they’re following me…the streets, the clubs…now the Dome. You’re in New Orleans now, and there’s no escaping….
Thanks for all who came out for opening night of “None a Stranger” at the Big Top on August 4. The turnout was amazing, and the response continues to great. the show will be open until August 30th – with a few more parties TBA —
Your participation in Elvis Death Anniversary was killer…i am currently processing the Elvis Toilet shots, and i know they are going to be great. Keep in touch for postings..
The last few months have been busy working with new clients such as School Band and Orchestra Magazine, New Orleans Magazine, and Maxim…plus, shooting High Sierra, and a friends wedding..here’s some highlights.
“None a Stranger” – Portraits by New Orleans photographer Zack Smith A solo show at 3 Ring Circus, opening White Linen Night, New Orleans, LA August 4th www.zacksmith.com www.3rcp.com
…first, a little about me..
“Street corners. Parking lots. My backyard. Your backyard. Under a banana canopy; photographs of strangers and friends made during times strong, times intimate, that end in times of familiarity and comfort. These photographs are just the start of a long relationship.” – Zack Smith
Over the last 10 years, I have been documenting the social landscape and the faces and personalities that surround me. From my street dwelling neighbors during my squatting days in Montana, close friends during backyard parties and portrait sessions, and folks passing in front of my lens; I have captured a wide cross section of randomness and familiarity through my portraits.
My portrait work has been featured in national and local magazines including recently: URB, Rolling Stone, Alternative Press, Parenting, Relix, New Orleans Magazine, and Antigravity Magazine. The last 8 years have been spent working as a freelance photographer in New Orleans, as my client roster of musicians, actors, and bands grow.
“ None a Stranger” – Selected Works On August 4, The Big Top Gallery in New Orleans will feature over 50 works by Zack Smith. Individual portraits and portrait installations featuring private moments with Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, bassist Cassandra Faulconer, writer Callen Cotten, and excerpts from his many portrait projects currently underway.
The show will open August 4th at 6pm, with a reception with the artist, and many, many, musical guests. The show runs through August 30.

HIGH SIERRA: – I will be setting up a portrait shoot at Camp Harry this year at High Sierra Music Festival on Saturday and Sunday, July 7/8. Ask around, come by and say hi, hang, make some pictures.
These guys are the real deal – and this show Sat. night at the Den was true testament that every show they play, the better/more creative/louder/stronger/ and confident they get. With the recent addition of the power housinn’, down right dirty, Satan style drummin of Dylan ‘sticks’ Hicks, and a sit in from Mr. Brian Coogan hisself – this show went down as one of the Best Planets shows to date. See them soon, buy the album, and come out to a show!
Chaz Fest 2007 – THE greatest little festival. For real. Held in the backyard of the Truck Farm, this little festival in b/t Jazz Fest weekends was in its 2nd year of operation, and it’s just what this city needs. Great music, unique and original – New Orleans musicians doing it all from rockin to chockin. Alex and Courtney were gracious enough to let me put up a backdrop and take some photos – i am in the works of scanning most of them for the folks…but here are two that made it out quick. enjoy. Z
