New Orleans Second Line Photography Workshop
October 11 @ 11:00 am - 3:30 pm$350
Only In New Orleans Documentary Series
The New Orleans second line season and marching in the streets is synonymous with what makes this city so special. The feathers, sashes, and pageantry of Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs of New Orleans have been parading on Sunday for over 60 years to the backbeat of multiple brass bands and the smells of sidewalk meat smokers. A photographer who knows the story and has the insight on such a storied event is bound to get once-in-a-lifetime images. Let me take you through streets of New Orleans and show you how to effectively photograph a New Orleans secondline with respect and creativity as we march with The Prince of Wales SA&PC. A portion of this workshop revenue will be donated back to the club for operating expenses.
I have been photographing New Orleans second lines for 20 years and I want to share the knowledge and resources I have to help you not only photograph the event but also learn how to connect with others and give back. We will share our digital and prints with the organization and it’s members to strengthen the relationships between photographer and culture bearer in an attempt to better tell the story of New Orleans’ great traditions.
WHERE and WHAT TO EXPECT
We will meet at Zack Smith Photography Studio at 4514 Magazine to plan our day. We will join the parade at the starting point at a location in nearby Uptown New Orleans. After joining the club we will march and photograph with them for the 1st 3 or 4 official stops on the route and loop back to a location to review our photos and talk about the day. We will not do the entire route but plan on walking a few hours and wear good shoes! Most of our shooting will be done while walking so bring only the gear you need and don’t bring your tripod. This class is for beginners and experts who want to learn better ways to photograph street events and learn more about New Orleans second lines.
WHAT TO BRING
You must bring your fully charged Digital SLR and any lenses you want to shoot with. Wide angle lenses are great to have when shooting street photography, but a long lens or fixed lens is great for getting those clean tight compositions.
All cancellations must be done within 90 days to receive a full refund. Within 90 days you have the opportunity to use your credit towards another workshop within the year if space provides. If you can replace someone with your spot, there is 100% refund.
