Listening to Tell Your Story: Why Hiring a Photographer Who Listens is Key to Capturing Your Story

In the end, it’s not just about the photos; it’s about capturing the heart of your event and conveying it to the world.

In the world of conference and convention photography, the ability to listen is just as important as the ability to compose a shot. Before that first photo, my listening has to start in that first email that comes over my Contact Form asking for my quote. The email is often short, and little details are shared. It’s then my first job to research the company it came from, the conference in question, and any information on this industry that is asking for my services…and THEN I respond. The way I speak, email, and respond is always professional, courteous and prompt but what I share and how I engage has EVERYTHING to do with my potential client’s industry. I am an expert In what I do and need to show it but I am never through with learning, so need to be open.

When it comes to hiring a photographer for your next big event—especially in vibrant cities like New Orleans, where creativity and storytelling thrive—it’s crucial to find a professional who knows how to listen to your vision. A photographer who listens well is able to go beyond merely documenting an event; they capture its spirit, emotions, and narrative in a way that resonates with your audience. (this IS why you document!)

Understanding Your Vision

Every convention or conference has its own story to tell. Whether you’re hosting a corporate event, an industry trade show, or an academic symposium, you want photography that reflects the core purpose and message of your gathering. I always ask for a mission statement if I can’t find it on that first fact finding mission.

A conference photographer who listens will ask the right questions to understand your goals. What emotions do you want to evoke in the final images? Is there a particular style or tone you want to achieve? Can you show me what you’ve done in the past, or what you aspire to be?

By listening to your needs, a talented photographer will ensure that the photos align with your vision. This understanding allows the photographer to capture images that go beyond standard event documentation. Instead, they will frame your event in a way that is authentic and true to the story you want to tell.

Empathy in Photography

Empathy plays a huge role in how a photographer captures a convention or meeting. A photographer who listens to you, and to the energy in the room, will naturally find moments that matter most. If you have ever seen me shooting an event…I am always scanning the room, moving around to the action and energy from those present. I am listening. Intently.

After shooting for over 25 years, I feel I can sense a moment before it happens and often, the best photos are these candid moments—attendees laughing together, deep in discussion, or simply enjoying the atmosphere.

Ever heard of “production black”? Yes – it’s an industry term for a crew to wear dark clothing as to not stand out. A skilled convention photographer will be able to blend in, making sure they are unobtrusive while still being present in key moments. They will notice when to step back and capture the quiet interactions that reflect the true essence of your event. This level of emotional intelligence comes only from being a good listener—understanding not just the logistics of the event but the emotional experience of the people attending.

Creativity Through Listening

Listening fuels creativity. When a photographer listens to the story you want to tell, they are better equipped to come up with unique and imaginative ways to capture your event. For example, if you’re holding a conference in a dynamic city like New Orleans, a photographer who listens can creatively incorporate the local culture and setting into the shots. Perhaps they’ll include iconic New Orleans architecture in the background, or highlight the rich colors and textures of the venue. Listening allows the photographer to tune into the nuances of your event, leading to more personalized and creative images.

Why Listening Matters in New Orleans Conference Photography

New Orleans is a city known for its cultural richness, vibrant atmosphere, and diverse events.
